Scoring to Remember with Laura Ortman & Razelle Benally

03.12.2025
6:00 pm–8:00 pm

How is sonic storytelling a strategy for subverting oppressive forces? From testimonies to protest songs and collective noise-making, sonic tactics are integral to political action. Musician Laura Ortman and filmmaker Razelle Benally discussed field recordings, expressed community narratives through sound, and the interwoven connections between musical and visual storytelling – with a musical outro performed by Ortman. The artists screened a video collage and reflected on their collaboration for Benally’s documentary series Murder in Big Horn, in addition to a number of other experimental collaborative projects such as STTLMNT, Red Brigade Films, and more. Ortman and Benally’s works have been screened at the Museum of Modern Art, Sundance Film Festival, and the MCA Chicago. Snacks were provided by Buffalo Jump.

Scoring to Remember was programmed by Shirine Saad, and organized by Creative Time.
