Studies in Sanctuary with Christopher Rey Pérez, Kameelah Janan Rasheed and Timmy Simonds

11.12.2026
6:00 pm–8:00 pm

Schools are regarded as spaces for learning, understanding our relationships to others, and negotiating the realities of power dynamics. Yet, they are also sites of contradiction, where opportunities for refuge and experimentation exist alongside reproductions of exclusion and authority. Can we imagine the school as something different? What could a space for collective study look like? And what forms of knowledge are recognized and shared?

For Studies in Sanctuary, artists Christopher Rey Pérez, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, and Timmy Simonds will offer exercises that approach collective study as opportunities to imagine alternative worlds to the ones we inherit. Pérez will explore the porous potential that emerges through acts of crossing various borders through a salsa-making workshop, inviting participants to contribute their personal recipes. Rasheed will engage collective writing, exploring what is unearthed when we disrupt our expected modes of communication. Simonds will demonstrate a tool he uses to meet with groups of teachers. Together, the artists invite us to consider cultivating sanctuary as a practice that necessitates collective study.
