“Surveillance Party”: Security and Safety for Artists in These Times

05.10.2025
2:00 pm–4:00 pm

Not too long ago the idea most people had of surveillance was a shady van full of recording equipment. Now we all carry a surveillance van in our pockets. And we – knowingly or not – trade privacy for the false promise of convenience and influence. As the surveillance state threatens the future of free expression, presenting major risks for politically engaged artists, where can we look for guidance on how to disentangle our digital lives? Welcome to the Surveillance Party. Artist and filmmaker Michael Premo (dir., Homegrown) hosted a conversation with artist Molly Crabapple, sharing tools and tips on how to protect your work and those you work with. An acclaimed digital security expert offered practical tools to increase security and safety, including tips for travel, with ample time to answer your pressing digital safety questions.

Art educators facilitated art activities for kids during this event, participants were expected to send an email to curatorial@creativetime.org if they planned to attend with little one(s).
