“I Can Beat You Up”: Angry Asian Womxn and Sisters in Self Defense

10.26.2023
6:30 pm–8:30 pm

6:30-8:30 pm

RSVP was required, as space was limited.

Angry Asian Womxn and Sisters in Self Defense joined forces to host an event centering healing, empowerment, self defense, and safety for Asian Pacific Islander (API) women, API femmes, gender expansive APIs and BIPOC queers. The program included an in-depth self defense class, a first aid workshop, a subway safety workshop, sound bathing, crafts, art, resources, and snacks. “I Can Beat You Up”, is a quotation from actor and martial artist Michelle Yeoh who often faced stereotypes about her own capabilities as a fighter during her boundary-breaking career. This workshop emerged on the heels of rising levels of aggression targeting our community in the NYC subways and increased violence perpetrated against BIPOC queers that precipitated the death of O’Shea Sibley in Brooklyn.

Self Defense Series

This event was part of an artist-led Self Defense Series at CTHQ. This series considered what it means to come together to form safety of self and safety of the collective through a spectrum of modes of empowerment, collaboration, and healing. These workshops featured artists who provide practical and critical skills to their communities, while challenging traditional definitions of self defense.

Other events in the Self Defense Series were:

Tuesday, October 24th, 6:30-8:30 PM: Defanging The Snake: Psychic Self-Defense & Weaponry in Filipino Martial Arts with Caroline Garcia

Wednesday, November 1st, 7:00-8:30 PM: Workshop with Trans Boxing
